Ard studied chemistry at the Utrecht University (Netherlands), with specialisations at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and Delft (Netherlands). He obtained a PhD in the field of solid state chemistry at the Utrecht University.

His main specialization was biophysical chemistry, and his ancillary subjects were exobiology & physiology. He did his research for his PhD thesis at the Medical faculty (department of Physiology) of the Radboud University, in the field of allosteric interactions of the binding of oxygen and co-factors to hemoglobin proteins of various species.
Dick studied chemical technology at the University of Twente (Enschede, NL) with a specialisation in process technology. He obtained his PhD degree at the same university for the thesis “Hydrodynamic studies of two and three phase systems: Pressure influence.”
